"I’ve never found a complete
bio on Dan Bern, but his adult
songs have a spellbound
following. At any rate, his life
and philosophy are greatly
accessible through his work.
Bern’s adult songs are
audacious, unsettling and
very funny, with tenderness,
personal truth, love and
sadness peeking between the lines of each. It’s no surprise, then, that his collection
for small children is tender, personal, truthful, loving and a little sad. And little
children will find it very funny.
2 feet tall was recorded for his daughter, Lulu, when she was a newborn—you
can hear her chuckling and gurgling in the background. There are 38 songs on
the CD—36 of them written by Bern. They’re Woody Guthrie gone giddy. It’s
impossible to select a highlight: there are songs about growing up, staying young,
animals exhibiting fantastic behavior, neighbors doing the same, bare feet, and
those dratted hiccups. It’s exactly the kind of silly stuff you’d make up for your
own baby, and you’ll wish that you could do it as well as Bern has. Of course,
after playing the CD a few times, you may be inspired to compose your own ode
to, say, burping.
“The weeks move so fast around here, you could almost see them flying away,”
Bern sings in “The Weeks.” 2 feet tall is a testament to a father’s unconditional
love for his child, who he wishes would stay forever young—Bern’s a Bob Dylan
devotee. But his songs remind you that childhood is ephemeral. Treasure this one."
Dan has made a new short film called "Gentile Athletes of the 60's and 70' ."

Dan was in Cedar Rapids, IA during the 2008 floods. He was involved with several charity events to raise much needed funds for flood relief. One of these projects was "Moving Home," a musical production. Dan wrote much of the music for this musical, and he also appeared in the production singing many of these songs.
The soundtrack for "Moving Home" is now available for downloading on most major music sites (iTunes, eMusic, Amazon, Rhapsody, Napster, etc.). ALL proceeds will go to the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation's Flood Relief Fund.

Here is an announcement from Dan:
some cool film projects coming out soon. "man from plains," the jonathan demme documentary about jimmy carter, prominently uses the song i wrote for the picture, "the ballad of jimmy carter/man from plains." mr. demme is a very cool guy. i got to meet the prez at the toronto film festival, where i sang the song before the screening. it was worth missing the u.s. open final....there will be a soundtrack album, with all 3 versions of the song i recorded in new york, with mike viola producing, and paul kuhn, among others, playing. in december, sony pictures will release "walk hard: the dewey cox story" starring john c. reilly as dewey cox. it was written and directed by jake kasdan and produced by judd apatow. i spent well over a year writing songs for this movie, and wrote more songs than i can count, many of them with mike viola. it was the most fun project i've ever been associated with. the movie will have several songs i wrote or co-wrote, and there will be a double-album of dewey cox songs, which will have a bunch more that i wrote or co-wrote. so, see these movies! get the soundtracks!

Dan's
new full-length cd, Breathe, was released on September 19,
2006! You can order your copy NOW in the store!
Dan
Bern's sixth long-playing album, Breathe—which again reunites
him with big-league producer Chuck Plotkin—is something entirely
new for the artist. It takes the personal and finds in it a seedling
of renewal. This isn't music that has 'big balls;' instead, it has
a big, beating heart. In a way, Bern had always been 'arriving'
prior to this, but with this album he has finally Arrived. The songs
are not merely preternaturally observant, as they have always been,
but feel fully present and made from flesh
and
blood. They trade in the verbal fireworks of the past and make a
touching investment in the lives of their characters, who are often
burned out and beat down by their overwhelmed lives—even the Messiah,
who reappears in the title track for His third act, seems more than
a little downcast—but who nevertheless somehow find the strength
and courage to beat back at the world, even if only in small or
symbolic ways. With a gesture of selflessness, Dan disappears into
these song-sized narratives and allows his characters to voice their
own—and, by extension, our shared—lives. In the process, he has
given them and his songs and himself a reason to hope. And room
to breathe.
Here
are a couple of tracks from the album, in MP3 format:

a preface by dan bern and an introduction by the esteemed

'the catcher in the rye,' 'cobalt--its forms and uses,' and other
great works of the english language. a limited supply of copies
of 'quitting science' ordered from this site will be signed
by dan bern himself, who, in penning the preface to 'quitting science,'
is perhaps as proud as anything he has ever done--short of winning
that spelling medal in the second grade. but never mind that.
